Art & Design

At Brooklands we aim to ensure that all our pupils are encouraged to explore and experience art in all its richness and diversity. We are extremely fortunate at Brooklands to be situated in a region that is steeped in art heritage and this supports our children’s rich and vibrant experience.

Firmly rooted in the latest, evidence-based best practice, our art curriculum is skilfully designed into blocks with each block covering a particular set of artistic disciplines including; drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, 3D and collage.

All of our children have regular opportunities to visit galleries in the region and Brooklands regularly welcomes professional artists to the school for workshops.

Each child has their own sketchbook in which they capture their work and maintain a record of their progression and skills through their time with us. This is a great way for them to see how their skills and knowledge are developing and growing as well as sharing their work with others. Linked to this is the way in which the learning modules are designed to develop pupils' oracy and vocabulary skills, enabling them to use artistic language in a meaningful way when talking about their work and the work of others.  Vertical progression is also woven into the fabric of the curriculum in order that pupils revisit key disciplines and ideas throughout their primary journey with increasing degrees of challenge and complexity.
